Closing the Cottage: The Northern Michigan Fall Checklist (2026)

Every September it happens: one cold morning, the lake turns that steel-gray color, and every cottage owner in Northern Michigan has the same thought — time to close up.

After fourteen seasons of opening and closing cottages from Torch Lake to Crystal Lake, we’ve learned that a good closing isn’t about one big weekend — it’s about doing things in the right order. Here’s the checklist we work from, so your first morning back in June starts with coffee on the porch instead of a mess.

Four to Six Weeks Out (mid-September)

Use up or take home open food — anything a mouse would thank you for. Start running down propane and firewood you don’t want sitting all winter. Book your close-up services now: plumbers who winterize, and yes, cleaning crews, book solid from late September through October.

Two Weeks Out

Wash and store outdoor cushions and umbrellas dry — put them away damp and June smells like it. Deal with the dock and hoist schedule. Empty planters before the first hard frost turns them to mush.

Closing Week: The Inside Work

This is where a proper deep clean earns its keep — because whatever you leave in the cottage in October is what you find in June, six months riper:

The refrigerator emptied, cleaned, propped open. Every crumb vacuumed from drawers, toasters, and under cushions (mice run on crumbs). Beds stripped, linens washed and sealed away or taken home. Bathrooms scrubbed and dried completely — mildew loves a damp, closed-up house. Floors done last, walking backward out the door.

And the closing-day list: water off and lines handled by your plumber, water heater per its manual, unplug everything but what must stay, thermostat set if you keep heat on, and a last walk-through with the light off in every room.

The June Payoff
