Thanksgiving is November 26 this year, which means the house is about to get an audience. Parents who notice things. A sister-in-law who runs a finger along the fridge top. Kids who will find the one sticky spot under the dining table within ninety seconds.
After fourteen holiday seasons cleaning homes from Suttons Bay to Elk Rapids, we’ve learned that guest-ready isn’t a weekend of panic the day before. It’s three or four small pushes in the right order. Here’s the plan we give our own clients.
Three Weeks Out: Decide What Guests Will Actually See
Walk through the house the way a visitor would: front door, powder room, kitchen, living room, guest room, guest bath. Everything else can be a closed door.
Clear the surfaces in those rooms first, because clutter hides dirt and makes a clean room look messy. Check the guest bath for the things you stop noticing: a slow drain, a tired shower curtain, the towel bar that wobbles. Make a short list of fixes and buy the small stuff now, while the stores still have it.
Two Weeks Out: The Deep Clean
This is the week to book a Top to Bottom Clean, not the day before. Two weeks out, the house gets the hard reset while you still have time for the little touch-ups, and the heavy work isn’t competing with grocery runs and airport pickups.
What makes the difference for a holiday house is the build-up nobody cleans in a normal week: baseboards and door frames, cabinet fronts, the inside of the microwave, the top of the fridge, light fixtures and ceiling fans, grout and tile in the guest bath, and the window sills your guests will lean on while they watch the snow come in off the bay. Our technicians hand-wash all of it, with green, non-toxic products that are safe around the grandkids and the dog. The full checklist is on our services page.
If you’d rather do it yourself, work top to bottom in each room (dust falls) and finish with the floors. Give yourself two full days.
The Week Of: Kitchen and Guest Bath
The deep clean is done, so this week is about the two rooms that get hammered.
Kitchen: empty and wipe the fridge so there’s room for the bird and the pies, run the oven’s self-clean cycle early in the week (it smells, and you want that gone), and clear a landing zone for guests’ dishes and coats.
Guest bath: fresh towels, a new bar of soap, a nightlight, and a wastebasket with a liner. Put out more toilet paper than you think you need.
Then hold the line with a ten-minute nightly reset: counters, sink, a quick sweep. It keeps the deep clean from slipping before anyone arrives.
One or Two Days Before: The Maintenance Pass
If you have a recurring General Maintenance Clean, schedule it for the Monday or Tuesday of Thanksgiving week. Bathrooms sanitized, floors vacuumed and mopped, beds made with fresh sheets, mirrors and fixtures shined. You walk into Thursday with nothing left but the cooking.
No recurring service? A one-time maintenance clean that week does the same job, and most homes come in between $168 and $296 depending on size. Our cost guide explains what moves the price.
After the Guests Leave
The Sunday after Thanksgiving is when most of our clients call. The house has absorbed four days of cooking, football, and muddy boots, and December is coming fast. A maintenance clean that first week of December resets everything, and plenty of families keep the every-other-week schedule through the holidays so the house stays company-ready without anyone thinking about it. No contracts; pause or cancel whenever you like.
